Knitting 101: How to Knit the Knit Stitch for Beginners

This video knitting tutorial will help you learn how to knit the knit stitch. This stitch is one of two basic stitches upon which thousands of stitch patterns are created. The knit stitch if used every stitch and row in a piece of fabric is called garter stitch.

Materials Used in this Tutorial

A Pair of Knitting Needles
A Ball of Yarn

Pattern Instructions

Skill: Beginner

  1. Step 1

Holding the working needle in your dominate hand, take the tip of the needle and insert it into the front leg of the stitch, “knitwise” (front to back), creating an x with the needles.

  2. Step 2

Pinch the needles together where they connect with your non dominate hand, grab the yarn and wrap it around the working needle by going around back and in between both needles where they connect in the x. If you are right handed this will be counter-clockwise and if you are left handed this will be clockwise.

  3. Step 3

Use the working needle to pull working yarn through the loop.

  4. Step 4

Slip the stitch off the main needle and onto the working needle.

Repeat Steps 1-4 until you have worked all the stitches on your needle
