Pattern Instructions

Skill: Intermediate
Cast On: 3 sts

  1. Step 1

Knit 6 rows. This should give you 3 ridges which we will work into next.

  2. Step 2

Turn your work 90 degrees clockwise and pick up one stitch in each of the garter ridges that you created. Insert your working needle in the edge of the garter ridge and knit into the stitch.

  3. Step 3

Turn your work again 90 degrees clockwise and pick up three stitches along the edge. They may be a little difficult to see. You should now have 9 stitches.

  4. Note

You can make your garter stitch edge wider by increasing the number of cast on stitches. Just add an additional two rows of knitting in step 1 for each additional stitch cast on.

Great video. This is a hard technique to explain without the visual. Thanks for such a clear explanation. I am going to include a link to this in tomorrow’s post.

Phew!! Thanks for posting this video. I have just watched the Shawl class online and was fine with everything but got a little lost on the knitted tab section. Now I can take another shot. :O)
